How Do I Set Up a Vaultwarden Client?

Connect a Vaultwarden client by entering the server URL in a Bitwarden-compatible app or browser extension, signing in over HTTPS, and syncing a test item before adding the rest of your vault.

Choose a compatible client

Use the desktop, mobile, or browser client that supports the Bitwarden protocol and the features your team needs. Keep the client current enough for the Vaultwarden version you run, and install it only from a source you trust. A client is the interface; the vault remains on the server address you configure.

Set the server address

  1. Open the client's account or server setting and look for the field for a self-hosted or custom server URL.
  2. Enter the HTTPS address supplied for your Vaultwarden instance, without changing its scheme or path.
  3. Save the address, sign in with your Vaultwarden account, and complete any second-factor step enabled for that account.
  4. Create a harmless test login and use the client's sync action to confirm that the item appears in the vault.

Protect the account

Use a unique passphrase for the vault account and keep recovery material offline where your team can retrieve it. Enable the account's available second factor, lock the client when you are away, and check the destination before pasting a password. Never put a master password, recovery code, or session token in a ticket.

Verify more than one device

After the first sync, repeat the check on the devices you actually use. Confirm that a new test item appears only where expected, that edits converge after a sync, and that the browser extension points to the same server URL as the mobile or desktop client. If a client shows an old vault, inspect its server setting before changing credentials.

Check the current project guidance

Use the Vaultwarden and compatible-client documentation for the versions you operate to confirm supported export options, client behavior, and recovery procedures. Export a current copy when the application provides that function and protect it like the vault itself. The alternative map explains the Bitwarden-compatible model.

Ask for account-specific help

For a URL, login, or billing question that depends on your service, use the support ticket form. Plan information starts at the products page.
